Top Three Things To Book When Planning Your Wedding

Top Three Things To Book When Planning Your Wedding

Have you recently got engaged (if so; congratulations!) or perhaps you’ve been feeling overwhelmed on just where to start when it comes to planning your wedding? From years of experience of chatting to brides-to-be (and also getting married ourselves), we’ve found these three things to be the most important to book first when planning your wedding in Sussex in beyond! You’ll most likely find that they’ll then help to sway your decisions further down the line too.

The Venue

Choosing your wedding venue is a great place to start. It can determine so many things about your dream day – from guest numbers to the time of year you tie the knot, the theme of your wedding, even down to the food and drink served to celebrate your big day. Perhaps you’d like a traditional church wedding and then go onto an elegant hotel to celebrate your nuptials? Or do you dream of hosting your wedding day, exclusively at one venue? If so; castles, country houses and beautiful barns could be perfect for you and your beau.

Enjoy visiting venues with your beloved and meeting with their wedding co-ordinators. Don’t forget to go armed with questions about availability (some are fully booked at least two years’ in advance, especially for summer weddings), how many guests they can accommodate, recommended wedding suppliers they work with (this can save you time sourcing, later!) and also ideas about how you’d love your wedding day to look. Planning on getting married in Sussex? Check out our list of The Ten Best Wedding Venues in Sussex .

The Photographer

Like venues, highly sought after wedding photographers can also be booked up for anything between twelve to twenty-four months in advance. And with the ‘average’ bride spending £1046 (according to findings by Brides Magazine), it’s a sizeable chunk of the wedding budget – understandably too, as your photos will provide memories to look back on, for years to come.

Research is key when it comes to choosing the person you trust with capturing your day. Peruse your favourite wedding blogs and magazines, along with online search engines to find style inspiration and also speak to friends and family who’ve recently got married for wedding photographer recommendations. As your photographer will be one of the most important people you choose to be part of your wedding; it’s vital you meet with them beforehand (be it face-to-face or via Skype) to discuss the type of images you’d like to be your treasured keepsakes from your wedding day and know that they ‘get’ you as a couple and your ideas. This will ensure they can capture those moments and more.

The Dress

For so many brides, finding The Dress is one of the most exciting experiences when planning their wedding. It can also be a minefield too; presenting lots of choices and unexpected options. Brides who visit our Sussex bridal boutique in Hove, usually make an appointment shortly after booking their wedding venue (although we can accommodate shorter timescales). Some have ideas of their dream dresses in mind, whilst others just enjoy trying on a variety of designer styles (from timeless classics to fairytale princess gowns and modern statement two pieces) and seeing what suits them best; after all, for most, they’ve never tried on a wedding dress before.

Once decided on a style – be it fairytale, fishtail, full length or short – brides can then delight in trying on gowns until they find ‘the one’. Our designer wedding dresses take up to 14 weeks to be made and we recommend allowing up to 8 weeks for any alterations brides wish to make. Of course, each dress can be personalised further and made uniquely yours. To get the wedding dress of your dreams, talk to your chosen bridal boutique about inspiration, fit and style.

DIY Wedding Or Not To DIY Wedding

To DIY Wedding Or Not To DIY Wedding – Which Option Is Right For You?

The DIY wedding – a wedding where couples practically organise and make everything themselves – has risen in popularity over the last few years, but is it right for you? We uncover the pros and cons of doing it yourself versus getting help, along with tips and tricks to ensure your DIY wedding day elements are as dreamy as you envisage.

DIY Wedding Pros

From wedding blogs to glossy magazines, DIY weddings have become more and more popular with couples who want to create their day, their way. It’s estimated that four in five couples now opt to DIY-it rather than choose from package options. This allows them to choose exactly what they want from their big day – from the venue to the décor, food to entertainment and so much more. The wedding planning world really is your oyster if you’re able to organise and plan each perfect detail yourself. Unsurprisingly, one of the biggest factors for choosing a DIY wedding is budget. With the ‘average’ UK wedding now costing well over £25,000, it is easy to see why brides and grooms are choosing to take matters into their own hands and do it themselves; saving themselves thousands of pounds in the process.

DIY Wedding Cons

Of course, doing it all yourself doesn’t come without its stresses. In fact, getting married is actually listed as one of the ten most stressful life events – and that’s not just when you’re physically doing everything. Remembering to organise and make every last detail; from decorating your dream wedding venue to baking wedding cakes or even making your own wedding dress can be overwhelming and lead couples to not enjoy the run-up to their wedding day. Also, it’s worth noting that wedding suppliers; be it photographers, caterers, cake makers, florists, venue decorators or DJ’s are professionals and will often have a contingency plan in place, should something go wrong. If you’re trying to take all of this work on by yourself (or as a couple!), will you be able to not stress and get any issues sorted out in time?

Not DIY Wedding Pros

For some couples the idea of planning absolutely everything is understandably terrifying and can even prevent them from getting married. Whilst you may not have control over the smaller details, wedding planners and venue wedding coordinators will be on-hand to help you, throughout the whole process, using their years of experience. By choosing a venue with a co-ordinator and their trusted suppliers, couples still can have their say on food, entertainment and décor, without the worry and stress of pulling of a perfect day on their own.

Not DIY Wedding Cons

Not planning, making and creating every last detail for your wedding day comes of course with its plus points, but will you regret not injecting your personalities into your wedding? Many formal venues will only work with their recommended suppliers, so your choice may be limited. By having a dedicated wedding planner or co-ordinator organising your day may also make you feel out of the loop and not in control of your wedding plans. Also, wedding planners and coordinators (even as part of your venue), come at a cost – does the cost of this out-way the stress for you?

Should I Have A DIY Wedding Or Not?

This all comes down to you and your partner and how hands on you want to be. If you want full control over all elements of your wedding – and are happy to dedicate time to make and create, or have a small budget; go for it! But, if you’re easily stressed, have only a few months ‘till your big day and don’t fancy taking everything on; don’t DIY. Only you know what will suit you and your partner!

Tips For DIY Weddings

Whether you’re now planning on getting stuck in and having a full DIY wedding or just want to incorporate a few DIY wedding details into your big day, here’s a few tips for you:

Make sure you leave yourself plenty of time. Like most tasks, you don’t realise how time-consuming things can be until you get started.

Don’t try to overdo it. Plan what you want to do, when you need to do it by and stick to it. Try not to overwhelm yourself with too many ideas or complicated processes.

Pinterest perfection. Pinterest is many a crafty bride (and groom)’s best friend. Create a secret board of inspiration. There’s plenty of décor tutorials to pin too!

Have crafty afternoons and hen parties. Spend time with your Mr or Mrs to-be by making things for your big day. Crafty hen parties are also really popular with DIY brides, giving them the opportunity to create details for the wedding whilst having fun!

Stick to the budget. With so many ideas, it’s easy to get carried away when planning your DIY wedding. Set an amount for the elements you’re DIY-ing (flowers, cake, decorations etc.) and stick to it.

Rope in family and friends to help. You don’t have to do it all by yourself. Mums, dads, bridesmaids, best men, grans, aunts, uncles and friends all want to be involved too – let them help you to create the day of your dreams!

Taking The First Steps to Planning Your Dream Wedding

Once you have got over the initial shock and excitement of being engaged and you’ve finished celebrating with friends and family it’s time to get started planning your dream wedding. So get a bottle of bubbly in the fridge, turn the TV off and sit down with your partner and we’ll talk you through the questions you need to ask each other to plan your dream wedding and make sure you both get what you want.

What kind of wedding do you want?

This may sound like a simple question but it’s one that is completely loaded. And while you may have dreamed of a church wedding all your life your other half may have different ideas. From deciding what type of ceremony you want – church or civil, to the reception afterwards there are a lot of important questions you need to ask each other to help plan your dream wedding. If you're in need of some inspiration, check out our last blog 'The Ten Best Wedding Venues in Sussex'.

Church wedding or civil ceremony?

If you’re having a church wedding are you both the same religion? Do you have your heart set on your local church or does it depend on the reception venue? For a civil ceremony are you thinking of the local registry office or do you have a venue in mind? Do you want to get married outdoors or have an indoor ceremony? Asking these questions will help you decide what’s important to you both.

Wedding reception – small and intimate or bigger is better?

Some couples may want a small and intimate wedding ceremony while others may want hundreds of guests. Thinking of the numbers early on will help you find the right wedding venue to cater to your needs as well as setting your budget.

What is your wedding budget?

How much do you want to spend? This really depends on what your priorities are, if you want a fancy wedding with all the trimmings then expect to spend north of £25K while if you’re happy with something a bit smaller and more intimate then you could be spending less than £10K. Ultimately it will come down to what you can afford and how much financial help you will be getting from your parents. Some of the questions you need to ask to plan your budget include:

Who do you want to invite?

One of the biggest factors that will affect your budget is the number of guests you will have at your wedding. From relatives and work colleagues to school friends, your wedding guest list can become a minefield that can quickly escalate out of control. Do you really need to invite your great aunty Mildred who you haven’t seen in 15 years? Are you really that close to your manager at work that you want to share your big day with them? It can be hard but this is where you need to be realistic and prioritise.

What’s your dream venue?

Do you want a country manor house hotel, a romantic castle or just a function room in your local pub? The wedding venue is likely to be one of the biggest costs both in terms of hire and food and drink. The bigger and more luxurious the venue, the more expensive the cost per head is likely to be.

When do you want to get married?

Do you have a particular date in mind, a time of year or are you completely flexible. If you are looking at venues in peak season – the summer months of June, July and August, then you’ll need to act early to book your dream venue as they can book out up to two years in advance for prime summer dates. Prices will also generally be a lot higher during peak months meaning that if you’re willing to look outside of these then you could bag yourself a bargain.
With these questions answered you should both have a better idea of what the other wants for your wedding. From ceremony and reception to guest numbers and dates, deciding on these details early on will help you get what you want from your big day.

Bridal Beauty Checklist For An Amazing Wedding

Beauty is all in the eye of the beholder, but to give you a helping hand and make sure you look amazing on your wedding day use our simple beauty checklist for guaranteed success.

Make Your Hands Pretty

When you’re looking to purchase your wedding rings ready for the big day make sure you give your hands plenty of love by moisturising and giving them a manicure. If you feel good about your hands then this will make picking a wedding ring so much easier. The same applies to your wedding day as your hands will be on show with everyone looking to see your wedding ring and plenty of photos with your hands in full display. Make an appointment the day before your wedding to have a manicure and get your hands in tip top condition.

Fitness Plan

A regular fitness plan and regime can not only help you look great but you’ll also feel fabulous too. From daily exercise and eating healthy food to making sure you drink at least 2 litres of water a day and getting plenty of sleep.

Skin Routine

Whether you have skin problems or not you should start a good skin routine at least 6 months before your wedding day. Exfoliate, cleanse then moisturise daily and you’ll see great results. If you do have any skin problems it’s best to see a dermatologist who’ll be able to help you create a custom skin care routine.

Beauty Treatments

From laser hair removal to waxing treatments, make sure you plan beauty treatments in advance. This includes everything from hair treatments such as Keratin to control frizzy hair to hair colouring and straightening.

Tanning

Tan at least two days before your big day as this gives you plenty of time to correct any mistakes or overspray problems. You want a nice subtle glow rather than an all-out party tan so giving your tan time to fade in will really help to create the perfect look.

Exfoliate on Your Wedding Day

Get your skin ready on your wedding day by exfoliating and moisturising on the morning of your wedding. Your makeup artist will be able to control any shine or oiliness with their products but make sure you have a trial before your wedding to get everything right and stick to the same routine on your wedding day.

Stick to What You Know

From skincare and makeup products to stylists, don’t try anything new in the week leading up to your wedding. The last thing you want is an allergic reaction so make sure that any products you want to use you have used before and know that they don’t cause problems.

Top Tips for Dressing Your Venue for a Stylish Wedding

So the plans for your wedding are well underway and you’ve chosen a venue you like, picked your dress and chosen a theme that you like, so what’s next? Well in this article we’ll talk you through how you can dress your venue to create the stylish wedding of your dreams.

Lighting

One of the easiest ways to dress your venue is by choosing the right lighting to create a warm, friendly and inviting atmosphere. From tea lights in mason jars to pillar candles and candelabras, using candles on the table will create a soft and warm mood. Another way to add lighting to a table is with a simple table lamp paired with a nice shade.

For outdoor lighting what about swapping fairy lights for festoon lights which give a soft, warm glow that is perfect for an outdoor wedding. Make sure your top table is well lit as all your guests will want to be able to see you.

Florals

It’s not just your tables that can benefit from floral arrangements, make the most of any features in your venue and add a touch of elegance with some beautiful flowers. Dramatic flowers don’t need to be limited to large centrepieces for your table, how about adding flowers to chandeliers, along beams or even up columns to give that added wow factor.

Flowers can help dramatically transform your venue and bring it to life and a good florist will be able to help inspire you and give you a range of options to suit your budget.

Bunting

In recent years the humble bunting has seen a huge resurgence in popularity and needn’t be the sole preserve of vintage themed or country weddings. For a more modern style why not look at metallic style bunting and team this with helium filled round balloons that will float stylishly above your tables.

Table linen

Don’t be afraid to stray away from standard white table linens and look at collars such as taupe which will help to bring warmth to your tables. If you fancy a brighter colour then it’s best to either use white flowers on the table or match your flowers to your linen to bring your decorations together.

Drapery

Drapery can be used to add a splash of colour to a boring room and can help brighten up anything from the ceiling of a marquee to ugly walls. You’d be amazed at how much difference it can make by simply adding some drapery to transform a boring room into a colourful dream venue. And with low rental costs, this option won’t break the bank.

Bring in the outdoors

No matter what time of year you’re getting married you can always bring a touch of the outdoors inside to create an outdoor feel to your wedding. From a country themed wedding set in a barn with rustic hay bales and wooden bar to elegant fruit trees covered in flowers lining your aisle. Adding some plants is a great way to bring style and sophistication to your wedding and help create a unique atmosphere that everyone will remember.

Make the most of features

If your venue has big windows and stunning open fireplaces make sure to accentuate these features and draw attention to them. From using up lift lighting and adding fairy lights to floral archways around fireplaces, there are plenty of things that you can do to help show off the beauty of your venue to create your dream wedding setting.

Wedding Dress Shopping Timeline

You’ve met the man of your dreams, accepted his proposal and set a date for your wedding; so now it’s time to start planning the perfect wedding. In this article we’ll talk you through the wedding dress shopping experience and tell you everything you’ll need to know. From when you should start to what accessories you’ll need, we’ll give you the advice you need to make your dress shopping an experience to remember.

18 - 12 months to go

Do your research

Once you have chosen your dream venue, worked out your budget and sent out your save the dates it’s time to begin searching for the dress. At this stage don’t focus too much on the style or silhouette of a dress but look at designers and details that you like. The time of year that you will be getting married will also play an important part in dress that you choose.

16 – 12 months to go

Start wedding dress shopping

It’s never too early to start shopping for your dream wedding dress. Whether you have a dress made to your measurements or pick the closest match from the designer’s chart, the average dress takes months of hard work to create.

Book your appointments at local bridal salons nice and early as weekend appointments in particular will get booked up fast. Make sure you take photos of and dresses and details you like to your appointment to help give the assistant an idea of which designers and styles you like.

12 - 9 months to go

Shop for your undergarments

The style of your dress will dictate what you can and can’t wear so bear that in mind when you go to your favorite lingerie boutique. You’ll also want to make sure you have your undergarments ready for your first dress fitting and if you are planning on ordering a dress to your measurements then you will need to make sure you get your undergarments before buying your dress. If you need any advice don’t forget to ask the assistant in your bridal salon as they’ll give you advice on what undergarments will be suitable for your dress choice.

Buy your dress

Between 12 and 9 months to go it’s decision time. Whether you are having your dress made to your measurements or picking the dress based on designer guidelines, make sure you bring the right undergarments with you as well as the height of shoe that you intend wearing on the day. This is the time when you can start getting excited when you pick “the one” that’s right for you.

When you buy your dress you’ll need to sign a contract as well as put down a deposit which is normally around 50% of the price of the dress. As wedding dresses are made to order designers need a down payment to start making your dress. Make sure that all the information is correct before signing your contract and check when the salon expects your dress to arrive.

6 months to go

Hair and accessories

Now’s the time to start trying out different hairstyles and shopping for hair accessories. If you’ll be wearing a veil not is also the time to pick this so you can try it out with the hairstyle you want. As well as trying out different styles you will also be able to pick your hair stylist and make sure they are available on your wedding day.

Pick your wedding shoes

Whether you’re going for a full length princess style dress or a shorter drop-waist dress, going shoe shopping is something that every girl loves. Get your close friends and bridesmaids together and turn it into a fun girls’ day out with plenty of treats.

5 - 4 months to go

First dress fitting

Once your dress arrives in your chosen bridal salon you’ll be contacted to arrange your first dress fitting. It’s common to have three fittings and the first fitting is all about identifying any alterations that need to be made. Make sure you take your undergarments, shoes and accessories to the fitting so you can determine the fit and length of your dress.

3 months to go

Something blue, borrowed and new

It’s time to start picking your something new, something borrowed and something blue. From blue shoes and borrowed jewellery to new undergarments, put together the items that you want to help to make your outfit special.

Second dress fitting

With just 6 weeks until your big day the first set of alterations will have been made to your dress and it will be time for your second fitting. Any big changes should have been made by now so any changes at this stage are likely to be either cosmetic or small changes e.g. smoothing out the hemline. During the second fitting you’ll also be able to move about in your dress and try some dance moves to check that the fit is right.

4 to 3 weeks to go

Final fitting

The moment you have been waiting for, all your alterations have been made to your dress and it is time for your final fitting. At this point you’ll want to make sure that you have your mum and either best friend or maid of honor with you. This is where everything will come together and you’ll be able to see your full outfit the way it will look on your wedding day. Make sure you wear some waterproof mascara and bring plenty of tissues with you.

The day before

Get everything ready

From unpacking your dress to putting your veil, accessories and shoes all in one place, make sure you have everything ready the day before your wedding. Get a handheld steamer and emergency kit including safety pins and fashion tape ready for any last minute emergency.

The wedding day

Enjoy it

Make sure you give yourself at least half an hour to slip into your dress and enjoy the experience in a relaxed and unrushed environment. One of your bridesmaids should be on hand to help with putting the dress on and helping with your jewellery. Now it is time to relax and enjoy your day.

How to Choose The Right Wedding Dress for Your Body Shape

Every bride dreams of the perfect wedding and choosing the right wedding dress will help to make this dream a reality. Selecting the “one dress” doesn’t have to be difficult if you follow our simple guide which shows you how to choose the right dress for your body shape.

Ball Gown or Princess Wedding Dress

The classic princess style, a ball gown wedding dress features a fitted bodice with a clinched natural waist and a very large and voluminous skirt that flares out. The skirt normally features lots of underskirts and tulle to help it to keep its shape.

Ball gowns are best avoided by petite brides as the large skirts can easily overwhelm and make you look even smaller. This shape works well for pear, apple and hourglass figures for mid-height or taller ladies. The style can also help more rectangular shapes create curves and help them to create more of an hourglass figure.

A-Line Wedding Dress

The main difference between an A-Line and a ball gown dress is the volume of the skirt. Both styles feature a classic princess shape and help to create an hourglass figure for almost any shape. Because of their classic shape and timeless style A-Line dresses are always a popular choice.

If you are unsure of what style of dress will suit your body type then an A-Line dress is a great starting point. This style works well on any body shape and will help to create an hourglass figure.

Empire Line Wedding Dress

Empire line dresses are an extremely flattering choice with a high waistline that starts just under the bust. This style helps to create the illusion of height and the high waistline helps to shift attention away from the midriff, bottom and legs. A very elegant, pretty and stylish choice, empire line dresses are a popular choice.

For brides with an apple, pear or petite shape, an empire line dress is the perfect choice as it will give a very flattering and feminine look. Busty brides should avoid empire line dresses as they will make you seem heavier on top.

Sheath or Column Wedding Dress

The sheath or column style dress as the name suggests follows the natural line of the body and doesn’t flare out. For tall, slim and athletic body types the sheath dress will help to show off your slim figure.

Petite brides who have a slim figure may choose a column dress with high shoes to help add height to their small figure. Apple and pear shapes should avoid a column dress as they will look unbalanced.

Mermaid or Fishtail Wedding Dress

A mermaid or fishtail shape is very slim and fitted and features a tapered, curve hugging body and skirt that follows the line of the hips and thighs and flares out below the knee. There are slight differences between mermaid and fishtail styles with the flare of the skirt slightly higher on fishtail in comparison to mermaid. Mermaid dresses are most commonly strapless and help accentuate the curves of an hourglass figure.

If you want a dress that shows off your figure and you have curves in all the right places then a mermaid style could be the perfect choice. This style is best avoided by those with an apple, rectangular or very slim shape.

Trumpet Shape Wedding Dress

The trumpet style is very similar to the mermaid but is slightly less fitted with a more subtle flare from between the hip and the knee outwards. The style still has a formfitting nature but is slightly less restrictive then a mermaid dress. For curvy hourglass figures the trumpet shape is a great choice that will help you show off your curves.

This style is also suitable for athletic figures as it will help to accentuate the hips and create a beautiful, feminine figure.

Drop Waist Wedding Dress

A drop waist dress has a fitted bodice below the waist and drops and flares slightly below the waistline around the hip area. This style is best suited to those with a trim middle as it hugs your waist and hips before flaring below. A drop waist is also a great way to help draw the eyes downwards for taller brides.

7 Mistakes Made by Brides When Dress Shopping

So you’ve spent hours on Pinterest searching for the perfect dress and now’s the time to actually hit the shops in search of your dream dress. But before you start here are 7 mistakes to avoid when dress shopping.

1. Shopping too late

Planning a wedding is an exciting process but in order to make sure you get the perfect dress it needs to be ordered no later than 6 – 8 months before your wedding. It often comes as a big surprise to brides just how long it takes to have a dress made so make sure you give yourself plenty of time. We generally advise brides to start looking for the dress 12 to 9 months before their wedding to give plenty of time for any alterations that may be needed.

2. Bringing too many people

It may be tempting to invite all your bridesmaids, close friends and family but having too many people around when looking for a dress will just be overwhelming. Having just your mum and best friend whose opinion you trust and who can honestly say when a dress just isn’t right is far better than having too many people involved.

3. Fixating on a particular size

Wedding dress sizing tends to be smaller than high street sizing and each designer works to slightly different measurements. Instead of worrying about what size of dress you are you should focus on what would work best for your wedding venue and makes you feel the most comfortable and happy on the day. Making sure you pick a dress that fits your body shape is also important. The dresses can normally be taken in several sizes quite easily, while they can only normally be let out up to one size.

4. Sticking with one style

You’ve got a Pinterest board full of inspiring ideas for your wedding and you absolutely adore that simple yet elegant dress but until you start trying on dresses it is hard to know which dress is right for you. Approach dress shopping with an open mind and don’t be afraid to try on a range of different styles. Chances are you’ll end up picking a dress that is completely different to what you originally had in mind.

5. Not setting a realistic budget

When you first start shopping for wedding dresses one of the best things to do is set yourself a realistic budget for your wedding dress. To get an idea of the budget it’s best to take a look at a few different dresses that you like and see what price range they fall into. By doing this you will be able to get a realistic idea of budget based on dresses you like.

6. Not asking for advice

Make the most of the expert advice offered by bridal staff after all they will have helped hundreds of brides to find their dream dress. Don’t forget they can help you with everything from picking the right wedding dress style for your body shape to how your dream dress can be customised to make it extra special.

7. Forgetting additional costs

Don’t forget about the extras so: wedding shoes, lingerie, a veil, hair accessories, petticoat and of course alterations. With a normal lead time of 12 - 16 weeks for a wedding dress it is normal for alterations to be necessary. From small changes such as hems to big changes like taking in or letting out, make sure you budget for alterations.

10 Things The Magazines Won't Tell You About Planning Your Wedding

So your favourite TV programme is “Don’t Tell the Bride” and your coffee table is covered with wedding magazines but here we tell you 10 things that the magazines won’t tell you about planning your dream wedding.

1. Make a list of things to bring back
All the magazines will tell you to make sure you have a list of things to take with you on your big day but few will ever mention what you should bring back from your wedding. From keeping an order of service for the day to making sure your hand crafted bunting is saved, make a list of things to bring back from your wedding and make sure this is given to your venue coordinator.

2. Get someone to download guest photos
Give someone the job of collecting guest photos of your big day. Armed with a laptop and a memory card reader they will be able to get a copy of photos that you may never have seen otherwise and that capture the atmosphere of your big day. Some of these photos could end up becoming the ones that you cherish the most from your wedding. There are also some great apps such as WedPics that can be used to collect the photos from all your guests.

3. Agree expectations with those contributing to your wedding budget
With the average wedding in the UK costing £24,000 it is one of the most expensive days of your life and one that you may need help paying for. When you announce your engagement your families may say they will help with the costs but in order to create your budget it is important to find out exactly what help they will provide. Also if they are going to be giving you a big chunk of your budget then there may be strings attached, from where they want you to have your big day to who should be on the guest list. Having an open and honest talk about this will help to avoid problems down the line when your great aunt who you haven’t seen in 10 years has been left off your wedding invites.

4. Ditch traditions you don’t like
Just because something is a tradition, it doesn’t mean you have to include it in your wedding day. Everything from having the speeches after the meal to the tossing of your bridal bouquet should be considered and done the way that you want. From running order of speeches to the actual wedding cake, don’t feel you have to stick with tradition if it’s not what you want.

5. Do you really need that fancy car
With more and more venues offering all in one wedding packages having a fancy car drive you to the venue no longer be the best option for most people. If your ceremony and reception are in the same place then consider if that wedding car is really needed or if you’d be better off spending that money on something else like your wedding photographer.

6. Hire the best photographer you can
One of the best ways to remember your wedding is by looking through your wedding album so make sure you get the best photographer you can. You only get one chance to capture those priceless moments on your wedding day from exchanging your vows and your first kiss to cutting of the cake and all the intimate moments in between. Picking a photographer with a great portfolio and lots of testimonials is one of the best investments you can make.

7. People will want to know when you will be starting a family
Your wedding day hasn’t even begun and already your friends and family are asking when you will be planning on having a baby. With all your energy focused on your wedding day this can come as a big surprise and leave you feeling emotional. Be prepared for lots of baby talk, especially in the first few months following your wedding because people will want something else to get excited about.

8. DIY touches will be the most memorable
Some of the most memorable things at your wedding will be the little DIY touches. Whether you and your bridesmaids have handmade the wedding favours or you have made some bunting, these little touches will help make the day unique to you. They will also make the perfect keepsakes that you can bring out in the future as part of memory box to help you relive the fun of your wedding day.

9. You will have at least one unexpected expense
It goes without saying that no matter how well planned your wedding is there will always be some sort of unexpected expense. Having a buffer in place of 5 – 10% of your budget will help to reduce the stress caused by extra expenses and mean that you can keep your wedding planning on track.

10. Hire a professional to do your flowers
It can be tempting to try and cut costs by doing as much as you can yourself but hiring a professional florist can actually work out cheaper, not to mention a lot less stressful. Not only can they get great deals on wholesale flowers but they will also do all the hard work of storing and arranging the flowers that will need to be done on the day of your wedding.

Latest Wedding Dress Trends 2016 and 2017

Spring is the most exciting time of the year in the bridal industry as this is when the designers reveal their latest collections of wedding dresses and wedding dress trends 2016 and 2017 are set. White Gallery is by far the most influential show in the UK where the biggest international couture designers showcase their collections. The show takes place in May of each year and is a widely anticipated event in the bridal calendar across the world.

London Bridal Show 2016 is the first event in bridal calendar where 2017 collections of wedding dresses are showcased in a three day spectacular. This event is a perfect reflection of the wedding dress styles that are popular with brides and sell really well across the country. The byers are unlikely to see statement dresses that are great for the glossy magazine covers or brave brides who are ready to make a statement. Instead they are treated to a nice selection of wedding dresses that brides are sure to desire, some of which are unsurprisingly inspired by the big couture names from across the world.

We were delighted to visit London Bridal Show 2016 at London Olympia in March and meet some new designer labels as well as watch the fabulous catwalk show.

Without further a due here are the latest wedding dress trends 2016 and 2017 from London Bridal Show 2016 London Olympia

Ladybird Wedding Dresses 2016 catwalk

Ladybird is a bridal brand that aims to grow in the UK and they have made a considerable investment in advertising campaigns. You can see their beautiful wedding dresses in most bridal magazines and they are sure to peak an interest from brides and attract more shopper to the boutiques. And when the brand invests in advertising, the buyers are sure to invest in the brand. So you can expect to see these gorgeous wedding dresses in many bridal shops across the country.

The bridal gowns are classic, elegant and sure to appeal to many brides looking for a more traditional, yet beautiful wedding dress. Classic A-Line and fishtail shapes with great use of lace fabrics is a clear theme throughout this bridal collection; and some of the design inspiration can be linked back to the iconic British design house Alan Hannah

Diane Harbridge wedding dresses 2016 Catwalk

Diane Harbridge is a British bridal designer and her ethos is about remaining true to that British tradition when it comes to wedding dresses. So it is not surprising that the collection features high necklines, classic shapes and some beautiful lace detail loved by so many brides in the UK. It is nice to see that whilst maintaining traditional and classic feel, the collection does cater for brides with various tastes. We can see light and floaty gowns for a more relaxed bride; clean lines and structure for a bride who prefers a couture look; lacy gowns for a romantic bride; as well a full skirt wedding dresses for a bride who wants to feel like a princess on her big day. This wedding dress collection is traditional, yet versatile so a very safe choice.

Lillian West wedding dresses 2016 catwalk

When Lillian West wedding dresses came on the catwalk they really got my attention. The first dress was a short little number, but the fabric was really unusual and unlike anything else I had seen before. Then came the gorgeous fishtail with a stunning back design which is so in vogue. The next dress looked very fab with its multiple layers perfect for a fun loving BoHo bride. Then bridal separates which are totally on trend and reminded me of the signature designs by Charlie Brear. Then couple of stunning wedding dresses that had a fabulous couture feel and oozed Ian Stuart. The final piece was very Claire La Faye (a fabulous American designer who we met in New York) and totally romantic. The conclusion- a fabulous mixture of styles for a bride who is not afraid to be different and is looking for something truly fashionable and on trend.

Victoria Kay wedding dresses 2016 catwalk

Victoria Kay much like Lillian West has introduce a dress with the statement Ian Stuart look, clearly popular with brides. We can also see some lovely golden tones, beautiful 3D lace, gorgeous embroidery and statement backs. Personally, I am not a fan of white tulle and much prefer to see nude tulle on the back, which gives wedding dresses much more of a wow factor and couture look. Having said that, the design works and looks beautiful. I do love Victoria's use of appliqué lace and this use of fabric is set to be BIG in 2017. As much as collection is traditional in many ways, the use of lace does give it that edge.

Casablanca wedding dresses 2016 catwalk

I have to say that at this point in the show I was getting rather fatigued and all the dresses started to look the same. But then... Casablanca wedding dresses came out and once again I got really excited. I visited their stand before the catwalk show and the first impression was- professional. Casablanca is an American brand and it was their first time exhibiting in the UK. The stand looked fabulous; their sales director really knew what she was talking about; their dresses looked beautiful; and most importantly, the wedding dresses are really nicely made. These wedding dresses are not available in the UK yet and you will see this brand advertised in the bridal press ready for the collections to arrive in shops in few months time. The dresses speak for themselves in terms of their look and it is a big YES from MODE Bridal to Casablanca.

We have some more fabulous 2017 collections to reveal straight from the London Bridal Show 2016 including designers Essense, Alexia Designs, Lilly, Tres Chic, Tanya Grig and Veromia. All to be revealed soon, but for now I hope you enjoyed our blog! :)

Buying a wedding dress- what to expect

Availability of Wedding Dresses

Bridal shops stock certain designer dresses. Not all wedding dresses from a particular designer collection are available in each shop so if you are looking for a specific bridal gown, be sure it is available prior to booking an appointment. Often bridal dresses can be sent in for you to try on by the designers for a small fee which is refundable if you purchase the gown.

Booking Your Bridal Appointment

Although you can pop into some shops to browse the store, you will be most often asked to book an appointment to try the gowns on. Some boutiques will do private appointments, but most will see multiple brides at the same time. Appointments last approximately 1.5h

Some boutiques will charge for appointments anything from £20-£45, particularly if those are Saturday appointments. The fee will be refundable against the purchase of the gown.

Sizes of Sample Wedding Dresses

Each sample wedding dress will be available in one size only, so expect to be pinned in or for the dress to be open at the back. Most commonly the sample wedding dresses are available in sizes 10-14, but some boutiques might have plus size collections for those looking for larger dress sizes. If you are looking for a larger size dress and it is important for you that the dress fits well when you are trying it on, be sure to contact the bridal shop and check their size availability prior to booking an appointment.

Ordering You Wedding Dress and Alterations

Once you are ready to order the wedding dress your measurements will be taken and the dress will be ordered in the size to fit your biggest part. For example, if you have size 12 top and size 14 bottoms the dress will be ordered in size 14 and then altered to fit you. Some brands offer mixed sizing and customisation is also possible at extra cost.

You will need to pay 50% non-refundable deposit on order and final balance when the dress arrives at the shop.

Most often the alterations will be necessary and those are at extra cost.

How long does it take for the wedding dress to be made

Most designers take up to 12 weeks to make the gowns and you need to ideally leave 8 weeks for alterations thus you should order your dress no later than 5-6 months prior to your wedding. If the bridal gown is handmade and has intricate beading detail, the lead time can be up to 20 weeks. Most gowns even by high end bridal design houses are made in factories in China, thus the lead time for delivery can be longer around Chinese New Year. Often the dress lead time cannot be shortened due to manufacturing process, although some designers are more flexible and will do rush orders, but this will be charged at extra cost.

Wedding Dress Shopping Experience at MODE Bridal

When I set up the business I wanted to be different and give brides personal service and quality gowns with minimal need for alterations. Thus at MODE Bridal we only deal with the designers who produces gowns in house; and currently we offer wedding dresses made in France, Italy and the UK.

Having dresses made by the wedding designers in house ensures high quality standard, use of good quality fabrics as well as gives us ability to order gowns made to brides measurements with full range of customisation options. This also gives us flexibility with order times and we can have the gown made as quickly as two weeks. This approach is not for the faint hearted, but gives absolute flexibility for brides to have their dream dress made even with couple of weeks to go until the wedding.

The wedding dresses available at MODE Bridal are often exclusive to us either in the UK or surrounding counties, thus ensuring that you will look not only stunning on your wedding day, but it is less likely that another bride will have exactly the same wedding dress as you.

We pride ourselves on quality of service and truly focus and offering the bride an unforgettable shopping experience. All of our bridal appointments are totally private, where you will be the only bride in the shop enjoying the experience with those closest to you.

We allow 2h for each appointment to ensure that you have plenty of time to try on as many dresses as you need before finding the one. Appointments are also available on Sundays and late evenings to suit your schedule. We will offer you styling advice and help you to find the perfect dress and accessories to complete your bridal look.

When I meet brides they often talk about their experience at other bridal shops and pressure selling is something that brides have come across time and time again. I do not believe in pressure selling and genuinely want each bride to choose the dress because she loves it, and has found “the one”. That way I can be sure that MODE Bridal retains its status as the must visit bridal shopping destination.

If you would like to be treated to a MODE Bridal shopping experience and see wedding dresses that are gorgeous and unique, please get in touch to book your private appointment 01273 930 990 | info@modebridal.co.uk | www.modebridal.co.uk/book-an-appointment

Anna’s 2016 collection Perla recently launched at Roma Spose Wedding Show is truly fabulous showcasing dresses that are beautiful, elegant and simply timeless.

Without further a due here is the fabulous Anna Tumas 2016 Collection Perla

The shape of perfection, the enchantment of the moon on the sea of precious charm and voluptuous seduction are reflecting the refined elegance of the 2016 Perla Collection created by Anna Tumas Wedding Dress Atelier.

The Perla Collection echoes natural beauty and the spontaneity brought by unexpected detailing, such as the purest little flower buds scattered on the fabric; or rippling effects of draped fabrics adorned with imaginative touches of silver threads that sparkle with the light on the fine Chantilly, Macramé and Rebrodé lace.

The style of the collection is maintained through use of soft silk fabrics such as Cady, Georgette and Chiffon that are exquisitely blended with the transparent lace; and the more structured fabrics such as Mikado make their debut to create gowns that are gentle and opulent.

The Perla Collection represents grace and originality by creating a perfect union of classical bridal gowns and innovative flair in modern Bridal Haute Couture.

Finalist- The Bridal Buyers Awards 2015 Best Bridal Retailer Website

MODE Bridal Boutique Brighton & Hove, Sussex has been named a finalist in The Bridal Byers Awards 2015 Best Bridal Retailer Website Category! How delighted are we!!!

Our Brighton & Hove bridal boutique opened its doors 29th November 2014 and since then we had an amazing journey. Opening a bridal shop just before Christmas when wedding dress shopping is the last things of brides minds was a scary experience, but once the Christmas was over the real fun started!

We attended some amazing wedding fairs in Sussex and London, including South Lodge Hotel, Hilton Park Lane and The National Wedding Show London Olympia of course. The brides had a fantastic reception to our exclusive to the UK and Sussex bridal collections and the first wedding dress sales started to come in.

Finding brides looking for wedding dresses in Brighton, Hove, Guildford, Horsham, London and Sussex overall by attending wedding fairs is one thing, but having our brides finding our Brighton wedding dress shop online is another challenge altogether. So building a best bridal retailer website was my upmost aspiration from the outset.

I entered The Bridal Buyer Awards 2015 on the off chance as I could recognise that we have created something truly special for MODE Bridal, but for a new start Brighton Bridal shop to actually get in to The Bridal Buyer Awards 2015 Best Bridal Retailer Website category was amazing! This has given MODE Bridal Boutique kudos within the bridal industry and certainly put MODE Bridal on the map when it comes to brides finding the best bridal shops Brighton & Hove, Sussex!

We are absolutely delighted with this achievement and cannot wait for the Awards ceremony on 14th September. Of course the team MODE Bridal would love to win, but we know that to become a finalist in this very prestigious bridal industry award in the best bridal retailer website category in our first year of trading is something to be proud of in itself.

Keep your fingers crossed for us and best of lack to all six finalists who truly deserve to be in this competition!

Wedding Dress Trends 2016 London to Milan

Spring is very exciting time for bridal industry and brides alike as this is when all the bridal designers bring out their next season collections and the top wedding dress trends are revealed to the bridal buyers and press. New York, Paris, Barcelona, Milan and London bridal fashion weeks is where all the magic happens and the very best designer wedding dresses get showcased on the catwalks.

As a wedding boutique owner in the art heaven that is Brighton and Hove and a wedding dress fanatic I love attending all the shows and getting to see the very best designer wedding dresses first hand. This year London and Milan stole the limelight for me in setting the hottest wedding dress trends 2016.

Wedding Dress Trends 2016 from London UK

Many bridal trade shows take place in the UK, but it is the White Gallery where all the top designers gather. This year the bridal industry was treated to two shows happening simultaneously and London Bridal Fashion Week also brought in some magnificent designers from across the world to showcase their bridal gowns to the industry. So London has spoken and 2016 wedding dress trends in the UK are all about

Softest tulle and silk organza skirts that create perfect fairytail wedding gowns. Light, romantic and utterly flattering, these dresses fit perfectly with the ever growing popularity of boho and vintage inspired weddings. So if you are an outdoor loving bride, who is looking for relaxed atmosphere and great party at her wedding, you will be spoilt for choice of beautiful romantic wedding dresses to suit.

Keyhole back! The back of the wedding dress has always been important as that is what all the wedding guests see as you walk down the aisle. This year designers have gone all out not only to create dresses with beautiful lace patterns covering the back but also to introduce beautiful shapes that reveal the back in a magnificent way.

Colour- historically only around 5% of all brides would chose to introduce colours into their wedding gown with vast majority choosing ivory bridal gowns. This bridal trend is changing with more demand for coloured wedding dresses, and this year bridal designers did not disappoint! We saw some gorgeous colour fabrics, flowers and embellishments being introduced which certainly create a wow factor.

Wedding Dress Trends 2016 from Milan Italy

Si Sposaitalia is the biggest bridal show not only in Italy, but the whole Europe. Perhaps this is not surprising as Italy is renowned for its high fashion and exceptional quality garments. And the show did not disappoint. The trend for tulle skirts and romantic boho inspired gowns was very strong, yet Italy added another dimension for 2016 wedding dress trends.

It was about sophistication and that effortless elegance that is achieved by using a mix of the best quality fabrics and incredible structure of the gowns. Softest silk, most delicate lace and detailed embellishments were brought together to create wonderful wedding dresses that are timeless, elegant and capture the feminine beauty of the bride. Our very own Anna Tumas stole the show with these stunning one of a kind bridal gowns.

All these beautiful dresses will arriving at the boutiques September time, and we have some very special surprises for our brides too!

Peacock Wedding Theme Ideas

Peacock Wedding Theme Ideas was a topic featured in the latest Brides Magazine, which gave me the inspiration to start doing my Peacock Wedding research. Very quickly it became apparent that pulling off this very classic wedding theme is harder that it first seams.

Internet is full of photos of peacock wedding invitations, peacock wedding flowers, peacock wedding cakes and you can even find peacock wedding dresses, but the loud and vibrant colours are often so overwhelming that brides are at a danger of making their wedding theme look too tacky and somewhat cheap.

The most common mistake brides make when planning their peacock wedding is using all the colours at once and using them on everything!  So we have pulled together some peacock wedding theme ideas that will help you to make your wedding theme have the wow factor whilst looking elegant and stylish.

Chose elegant pieces that will give your peacock wedding theme sophisticated feel

For our inspiration board, we have chosen Carrera Venecia wedding dress by the amazing Italian designer Anna Tumas- you can find more pictures HERE. This wedding dress is very simple in its shape, yet it accentuates the feminine silhouette beautifully; and the back of the wedding dress with its detailed embellishments on the train gives it all the grace and striking beauty associated with the peacock. Add some gorgeous Sergio Rossi wedding shoes in peacock wedding theme colours and you have a strikingly elegant bridal look.

A statement wedding flower arrangement using these bright peacock wedding theme colours will give your wedding day a the wow factor, particularly if you place it so that it is the first thing your wedding guest see when they arrive at your wedding venue.

Little touches create perfection for your peacock wedding theme

Peacock Themed Weddings

When it comes to peacock wedding theme the little touches are the ones that can create perfection; and they do not have to blow your wedding budget. Like these lasercut paper peacock wedding placeholders from aliexpress.com at a cost of only 13p per item! Use of the peacock bird shape in white with the names of your wedding guests is a very personal touch that incorporates the peacock into the wedding themes in a very elegant and subtle way.

We have also found some beautifully decorated cake knifes that incorporate your peacocks wedding theme perfectly. And the peacock wedding theme would not be complete without the peacock feathers, so placing few into your wedding bouquet and centrepieces can look fabulous.

Peacock Wedding Theme loves white

Yes, white! Not the colour found on the peacock feather, but perfect for peacock wedding theme. It makes a great canvas that allows you to show off all your other beautiful touches such as centrepieces and chair deco. So go for white tablecloth and chair covers that will contrast the peacock wedding colours used in your wedding decorations beautifully and give your wedding a crisp and elegant feel.

What about peacock wedding theme and bridesmaid dresses?

As much as it is very tempting to dress up your bridesmaids in bright bridesmaid dresses full of colour and feather motives, it is a high risk strategy. You are at risk of a total peacock wedding colour overload and your bridesmaids getting lost amongst all the other gorgeous wedding decorations and wedding flowers. A great way of balancing this is by choosing one colour from your peacock feather wedding theme and using this for your bridesmaid dresses. We have chosen navy blue, which fits into the peacock wedding theme perfectly and gives a very elegant look and feel to the wedding day.

4 Very Different Wedding Cakes

For those bride’s that are looking for something non-traditional when it comes to wedding cake, we have found these four very gorgeous and very different wedding cake ideas inspired by our European neighbours.

Traditional Spanish Wedding Cake

The traditional Spanish wedding cakes (photo above) are not particularly tall, nor are they white. They are mostly single layered and filled with coconuts, almonds, pecans and pineapples soaked in rum and are decorated with red frosting with traditional lace motifs. The deco is very distinctive so when you see a Spanish wedding cake, you will recognise it straight away.

French Wedding Cake or Croquembouche

Name croquembouche comes from the French words croque en bouche meaning ‘crunch in the mouth’. This cake is made from profiterole balls that are bound together with caramel in to a high cone shape and covered with threads of caramel, sugared almonds, chocolate or macaroons.  The cake is also used for Christenings and is popular not only in France but also Italy.

Italian Milefoglie Wedding Cake

You can be spoilt for choice with Italian wedding cakes and for every region you will have a very delicious and different signature cake. However they all have one thing in common and that is fresh ingredients. One of my favourites in Millefoglie  which literally means “thousand layers”. This traditional Italian wedding cake is made up of many thin sheets of filo-like pastry or puff pastry and layers are filled with a light cream and mascarpone and topped with berries or fresh fruit and a dusting of powdered sugar. This is very pretty cake, which does not tower up due to the way the ingredients hold together.

German Wedding Cake or Baumkuchen

Baumkuchen is probably the most difficult cake to make so it is not surprising that it is saved for very special occasions. The baker creates perfectly round cake rings by baking them on a rotisserie. The fresh pastry is poured on layer by layer whist cake is being rotated and the skill is in timing the layers so they are perfectly cooked and do not dry out whilst remaining nice and thin. The Baumkuchen is also called a Tree Cake, because the layers of golden rings look like a tree when cut. It can be served on its own or filled and decorated with cream and fresh fruit.

Which one is your favourite?

3 Top Tips for buying a wedding dress

We have put together a few simple and practical tips that will help brides to choose the right wedding dress

Should I buy a wedding dress that is on trend?

Wedding trends like fashion trends will come and go, but there are those timeless pieces that will always look good. Fortunately for modern brides 2015 and 2016 wedding trends are all about red carpet inspired elegance and timeless gowns that represent bride’s personality. It’s important to remember that it is not the trend that matters; it is how the dress makes you look and feel, so always go with what makes you look and feel the best.

What to look for in a wedding dress?

Brides often have a vision of their dream wedding dress and in so many cases they buy something that is totally different than what they had imagined. That is because when it comes down to the decision on which wedding dress to buy it is all about what flatters your body the best. So be open-minded and look for the best wedding dress shape for your body.

Quality of fabrics and the workmanship of your bridal gown are also very important. You will be surprised how camera pics up these little details and you don’t want your wedding dress to look cheap in your wedding photos.

What are practical things to do to make sure that the wedding dress is right for me?

Make sure you move about in the wedding dress when trying it on. You are not going to be standing still all day, so make sure you walk around, sit down in the dress, walk up and down the stairs if possible. Your wedding day is a party and you are likely to dance and walk about to mingle with your wedding guests. It does not matter how gorgeous the wedding dress might look, if it is stopping you from having fun it is not the right one.

Top Wedding Do’s and Don’ts

Wedding planning, looking for the best wedding venue, searching for that perfect wedding dress and doing it all with a budget in mind can be both very exciting and very overwhelming at the same time. Before you know it everybody has an idea on what you should and shouldn't do, there is family to please, friends to consider and a whole load of wedding suppliers to talk to.

So- how to strike the balance and make sure that you make the best of your budget and have the perfect wedding day? The best advice comes from the brides who have been through the experience and can share their tips on wedding Do's and Don'ts

Do negotiate with your wedding suppliers

Particularly if you are planning a wedding that is not in a wedding peak season. Summer is the busiest time for tying the knot, where in the winter months suppliers are often less busy and having a booking at a lower price is better than not having one at all. You might not always be successful, but if you don’t ask you don’t get!

Don't try to keep everybody happy

It is very easy to get engrossed in the advice from your friends and family and feel a little overwhelmed and confused. They have the very best intentions and you will find some of their practical tips very useful, but this is your day and it has to reflect your and your groom's personality and individuality. I remember my mum trying to persuade me to buy a lace wedding dress; and as much as lace wedding dresses look absolutely gorgeous on some brides, I felt like a doily wearing one. But as all mums do, she realised that is about me being happy on the day so we went for something with few embellishments and no lace.

Do get your groom to surprise you with the honeymoon

This will give your husband-to-be a chance to make a really great contribution to the wedding planning, add some excitement to your honeymoon and will also be one less thing for you to worry about!

Don't be distracted by providing expensive favours

Although they are a nice touch, their contribution to the overall feel of your wedding will be minimal. There are so many nice ideas on-line for wedding favours giving you plenty of inspiration to create something personal, memorable and inexpensive.

Do have a test PHOTO SHOOT with your photographer

The wedding photos are one thing that you will have to look back at and share with your future family and friend. Therefore being totally comfortable with the work that the wedding photographer can produce is key. Their work might look amazing, but you need to be sure that they understand your style and can capture you as a couple well. Plus this will get you a chance to get use to the camera before the wedding day itself.

Don't compromise on entertainment

I often come across various wedding info graphics and one thing that comes up time and time again in relation to biggest regrets of the couple reflecting on their wedding day is the wedding entertainment. So many couples regret not having spent that little bit extra to have somebody that can truly entertain their wedding guests and get the party going. After all entertainment is about having fun a good time, so that is what will set the tone for the party and stay in your and your wedding guests memories.

Do take time during the wedding day to just sit back and enjoy your wedding day

All that wedding planning can take months, even years- and it all comes down to just one day. So make sure that you find the time to just relax and enjoy the moments, they will be the ones that will stay in your memory forever!

Which style of Vintage are you?

Mode Bridal is a very proud stockist of wedding dresses by the award winning designer Terry Fox, who has been credited with bringing vintage back to British brides. She loves creating unique wedding dresses that have that vintage vibe.

But when you think of a vintage wedding dress, each of you will have a very different image in your mind. Some of you will picture something loose fitting, with dropped waist and elaborate beading with that Downton Abbey feel; where others will see fitted flowing silk gowns from a Hollywood movie; or a lovely hourglass silhouette, little white glows and knee length dress so in vogue in fifities ; or perhaps a barefoot bride with a lose and flowing gown and some flowers in her hair...

Whatever sparks your imagination, we want to take you on a journey of vintage, so you can find the perfect style for you.

1920s

This era was all about shorter hemlines (often mid-calf) and loose fitting dresses with dropped waste. The look was finished with Juliet cap and a long cathedral- length veil. Ornate beading and strings of pearls were a perfect finishing touch for creating an opulent look.

1930s

Influenced by the silver screen and Hollywood glamour, the wedding dress fashion turned to close fitting silk gowns that would sweep the floor and radiate elegance and sophistication. It was all about the cut and the flow of the fabric, with very little embellishments used. Rhinestone jewellery, wraps and stoles became the must have accessories of 30s bride.

1940s

With the world at war again, the white wedding was something of a luxury and the brides had to be very creative. This is when colour truly entered the wedding fashion with red gowns and skirt suits being particularly popular. The most iconic gown of the 40s was of course that of Princes Elizabeth. Ivory satin dress was embellished with shimmering floral garlands, sea pearls, sparkling crystals and glistening silver threads.

1950s

Bridal fashion in 50s was all about fun and playfulness. Hourglass silhouettes, tiny fitted waists, just over the knee-length dresses, little white glows, bridal jackets and stiletto heels. The most iconic dress symbolising this era was that worn by Audrey Hepburn in 1954.

1960s

This is when mini dresses came into fashion and many brides chose to wear them with white tights and knee high boots or flat shoes. Whether you were mini or maxi girl one thing was a must- it was all about slim fitting gowns. Empire waistlines and A-line gowns were all the fashion.

1970s

This is the era of the bohemian bride and the bridal fashion can be best described as relaxed. It was all about loose fitting, light and floaty maxi dresses with a romantic medieval feel. The look was finished with the bride having loose hair decorated with floral circlets- the perfect Boho look.

We have taken you on a brief journey of the bridal fashion and hope that this will help you to find your perfect Vintage Wedding Style. We will be exploring each of these fascinating eras in more detail in our blogs very soon, so watch this space!... and of course do not forget to check out our website where you can find some gorgeous vintage inspired wedding gowns.

The story behind Mode Bridal

Hi, my name is Jana and I am the owner of Mode Bridal. This is my first ever blog (so go easy on me please) and I want to tell you a little bit about me and the concept behind my boutique. Read on and you will see why Mode Bridal is a little wedding dress heaven not to be missed!

I remember my first ever experience of wedding dress shopping. It was 2008, I was engaged and so excited to go and find that dream gown. I was know for my love of shopping and beautiful things (shoes in particular!), so finding the dress seemed like an easiest thing in the world... Until I started ...

I soon realised that as a bride you are entering a world of truly unknown: designer names that you are not necessarily familiar with; dresses that you love, but struggle to find a place that sells them; taking time off work for appointments; waiting for the dress to be made for months; alterations... Overwhelming!

Then my best friend got married in January 2014... And it was another level of stress all together. She was not able to order her wedding dress and was limited to sample sales only because almost all dresses are made in China and every boutique we went to could not do a rush order- run up to Chinese New Year we were told time and time again. So I thought there has to be a better way!

And there is... The wedding dress is one gown that you will remember all your life, so it has to be beautiful, unique and a reflection of your personality. And the experience of finding that dress has to be one to be truly enjoyed and cherished.

What makes Mode Bridal unique?
